Gabriel Slavitt
"My art is a study of my place in the world, a journey of spiritual understanding. It is not a clear path and it wavers. Lots of sitting and thinking, occasional shocks of insight, and plenty of struggle, forgetting, and relearning. The art reflects this back and forth, celebrating the variety of experience and accepting the difficulty of the journey.
There are moments of great peace of mind as well as moments of anxious obscurity. Often there is a solitary figure in the work, observing themselves, or observing nature. Other times, the figure is swallowed up in darkness. Probing the edges of identity, the boundaries become fluid; the individual is absorbed into something larger. T
he nailbiter exclaims in terror, ‘The world is out of my control!’ while the flower-gazer closes their eyes and thinks happily, ‘The world is out of my control!’ Wonder in its dual sentiments: awe and questioning. A great sense of mystery."
